There are three things that remain consistent amidst the ever-changing search engine algorithms. This trio of foundational elements are user experience, content quality, and site authority. Let’s have a look at each of these.

User Experience (UX)

Google (and other search engines) is in the people pleasing business. They want to serve up relevant content that the people find helpful. You should be in the same business. Keeping the user in mind with every decision you make about your content and website, you’ll ensure a smooth experience and this signals to the search engines that your site is of high quality which will contribute to higher search rankings.

Search engines definitely prioritize websites that offer a user-friendly experience so you should be looking at fast loading times, mobile responsiveness, intuitive navigation, and accessible design.

Content Quality

I really hate even typing the term “Content is King” but its so true, I can’t quite not say it. High-quality, engaging, and relevant content is a must for attracting and retaining visitors. Search engines favor content that satisfies user intent, provides value, and establishes your site as a credible source of information. This means you should invest in well-researched, original content that resonates with your audience. 

Site Authority

Sure, one of the signals for site authority is the age of the domain but there are ways to build site authority too. This involves earning trust from both users and search engines. You can do this by acquiring quality backlinks from reputable sites, establishing a consistent publishing history, and gaining recognition in your niche. Again, this comes back to quality content. Make it so good that your audience wants to share it. This is the main way to get backlinks.

Technical SEO for WordPress

Technical SEO is the foundation for your site’s search engine performance, ensuring that it can be easily crawled and indexed. For WordPress users, addressing the technical aspects of SEO involves several key things. Let’s look at them now.

Site Speed Optimization

Let’s start with the main thing, your hosting provider. All hosting is not equal and you can optimize the shit out of everything on your site but if you have a crappy host, it will be done in vain.

Since we are talking about technical SEO for WordPress sites, wouldn’t it make sense to have a hosting provider that is specifically set up to run WordPress sites? There are a few out there but I highly recommend SiteGround. Not only are they awesome (and what this site is hosted on), but they are very affordable too. (This is an affiliate link and I may get a small commission if you purchase through it but I only recommend what I use myself.)

Once we are sure we have a decent hosting provider, we can also focus on things like leveraging caching and optimizing our images. For example, resize your images to the actual size you will need. There is no need to have a 2000px wide image in a 500px wide column on your website. I also recommend a free service called Tiny PNG. I always export mine as .webp format to compress it even further. They even have a WordPress plugin, although I’ve never personally used it.

Mobile Responsiveness 

Having a mobile-responsive website is no longer optional. Over half the traffic on the majority of the sites I manage is from mobile devices. WordPress themes should be chosen and customized to ensure they look and function seamlessly on all device sizes. This is one of the things I love most about the Divi theme. It is pretty much mobile ready out of the box but you also have full control of almost every aspect on different device sizes if you want to customize things.

Secure Connections (HTTPS)

Security became a huge ranking factor a couple years ago when it comes to SEO. Having an SSL certificate to enable HTTPS on your WordPress website is essential. This not only protects your users’ data but also improves your site’s trustworthiness in the eyes of the search engines.

SEO Plugins

You are able to have some fairly decent SEO with just the Divi theme. However, I always take it a step further and use a plugin for this as the available plugins generally have many more options and control over how search engines view your site.

Utilizing SEO plugins like RankMath, Yoast SEO, or All in One SEO Pack can significantly streamline the process of optimizing your site structure and metadata. These tools will help in creating XML sitemaps, optimizing meta tags, and generating SEO-friendly URLs, among other things.

Structured Data and Schema Markup

Implementing schema markup can enhance your WordPress SEO through rich snippets on the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). This structured data helps search engines understand the content of your site, potentially leading to higher click-through rates. RankMath does an excellent job with this!

Content Is King

There, I said it a second time. Hell, I even made it a heading. It really is that important. For WordPress sites, producing high-quality, relevant content is not just about filling pages with words; it’s about crafting valuable experiences that engage and retain your audience.

Creating Valuable Content

You need content that is informative, engaging, and answers the needs of your audience. This involves thorough research to understand what your audience  is searching for, their problems, and the solutions they need.

One sure way to do this is making use of Buyer Personas. A buyer persona is a semi-fictional representation of your ideal customer. It includes details descriptions of the customer’s demographics, behavior patterns, motivations, goals, challenges, and other psychographic information. While this is a “made up” person, they are based on real people.

Creating a buyer persona will help you understand your target audience much better. This will allow you to create amazing content that speaks directly to your audience. I use buyer personas all the time. This is where all marketing should start.

Keyword Research and Integration

Making use of tools like Google’s Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or SEMrush can help identify the keywords your target audience uses. Integrating these keywords naturally into your titles, headings, and body text helps improve your content’s visibility and searchability. 

Content Freshness and Updates

Keeping your content fresh is crucial. Regularly updating your posts with the latest information, statistics, and trends not only keeps your audience informed but also signals to the search engines that your site is active and relevant. 

Diverse Content Formats

Its best to have multiple content types. Don’t only focus on blog posts. Sprinkle in some videos, infographics, or even podcasts. This diversity not only caters to different audience preferences but also enhances the overall user experience.

These elements help search engines understand the content of your pages but also influence the click-through rate from search engine results pages (SERPs). It’s like an advertisement for your site.

Go do a Google search for anything right now. You’ll see the big important text, usually blue and clickable. This is the title portion of your page. The smaller “body” text below that is your meta description. Include a call to action in it if you can. This is your opportunity to sell them on why they should click this link.

Use headings (H1, H2, H3, etc.) to structure your content on your page. The SINGLE H1 tag should be used for the main title, and subsequent headings should be used to organize content hierarchically. This structure helps search engines and users alike navigate your content more effectively.

We spoke about this a little earlier. Ensure that all images on your site are optimized for both speed and search engines. This includes descriptive file names, alt text, and compressing images to reduce load times.

Off-page SEO is exactly what you would imagine. It is actions taken outside (or off-page) of your own website to impact your search rankings. It’s crucial for establishing site authority and improving visibility. Here are some key off-page SEO strategies for WordPress sites:

One of the most important off-page SEO factors is the number of quality backlinks pointing to your site. Focus on earning backlinks from reputable, authoritative sites in your niche. I usually use GTM to install analytics on my website and will also set up tags to fire when certain actions take place. Sometimes, the full effects of an algorithm update take time to become clear and things will eventually balance back out.
